What if we were to create a space where people could come together to enjoy food & share a healthy meal, regardless of economic status? SAME Cafe (So All May Eat) was started with just that idea. The cafe features a daily menu featuring fresh, organic ingredients... but here's the catch, there are no set prices! It runs on a pay as if you can system, where the diner pays what they feel their meal was worth. This way if someone can't afford a typical meal they can opt to either leave what they can or exchange pay for an hour of service (perfect for an education opportunity... no?) Another unique feature is that you tell the chef the portion size you want (with the opportunity for seconds) so as to not waste any food... (no need to stuff your face or get a doggy bag)
Our site's location between the Regional Market and the Northside neighborhoods is the ideal test ground for such a provocation. It would allow for a healthy (and AFFORDABLE) dining experience for families that often can't access such meals. The volunteer option could act as an extension of the teaching kitchen, as volunteers learn how to make the meals... and as the cafe would be adjacent to the regional market, why not have all the produce provided by the local farmers?
"everyone, regardless of economic status, deserves the chance to be eating healthy food while being treated with dignity"
